San Antonio, Texas – Elden Balderas walked into City Base Theatres expecting nothing more than a quiet birthday outing with his mom—a simple plan that, not long ago, wasn’t guaranteed. Turning 17 is a milestone for any teenager, but for Elden, after nearly losing his life, there was a time when his family didn’t know if there would be any future celebrations at all. This birthday represented something far greater: a celebration of both life and resilience, shared with the people who have stood beside him through every step of his journey.

What Elden didn’t know was that the evening would become a dual celebration—honoring not only his birthday, but also the reveal of a wish that had quietly been months in the making. As he entered the theater, he was met by the smiling faces of family and close friends gathered just for him. City Base Theatres generously donated a private auditorium, transforming an ordinary movie night into something deeply personal and unforgettable. A birthday cake sat nearby, laughter filled the room, and for a moment, the weight of the past gave way to pure joy.

As the lights dimmed for a private screening of The Conjuring, one of Elden’s favorite films, the meaning of the night began to sink in. This wasn’t just a birthday surprise—it was the realization of a wish revealed side by side with a birthday that once carried uncertainty. The emotions on Elden’s face told the story better than words ever could.

Today, Elden continues to manage complex medical needs that shape his daily life. He lives with the lasting effects of a traumatic brain injury, including seizures and ongoing challenges with mobility and coordination. Once very athletic and constantly on the go, he has had to adjust to physical limitations and focus on healing at his own pace. The road forward still includes physical therapy, medical appointments, and constant perseverance. Tasks many teenagers take for granted require determination, patience, and strength. Yet through every obstacle, Elden has continued to show remarkable resilience and an unshakable spirit.

One constant connection to who Elden is—and who he has always been—is his love for Western wear. That passion became the heart of his wish. On a night that celebrated how far he has come, Elden was gifted the freedom to choose items that make him feel confident, comfortable, and true to himself. Through the generosity of Kids Wish Network, Elden was given a shopping spree to some of his favorite stores with a thoughtful gift card from Cavender’s Boot City adding an extra touch to the experience.

And on a birthday that nearly didn’t happen as once imagined, Elden was reminded how brightly the future can still shine.

Many Thanks

Kids Wish Network could not have provided this wish to Elden without the help of City Base Theatres, Cavender’s Boot City, and the many supporters who believe in making wishes come true for kids who need hope.
